Marguerite-Marie Alacoque (Verosvres, 22 juillet 1647 - Paray-le-Monial, 17 octobre 1690) est une mystique de l’ordre de la Visitation inspiratrice du culte au Sacré-Cœur et reconnue sainte par l'Église catholique.

Un siècle plus tard, en 691-692, le concile In Trullo dans son canon 82 stipule que le Christ ne doit pas être représenté sous les traits d'un agneau car il est un homme.
La querelle iconoclaste
En 726, l’empereur byzantin Léon III prend position, en public, contre le culte des images (ou icônes). Ainsi naît l'iconoclasme; mais le pape Grégoire II, ne l'approuve pas. Les persécutions commencent contre les défenseurs des icônes ; certains mourront en martyrs.
Dans le palais de Hiéréia à Constantinople vers 754, l’empereur Constantin V, fils de Léon III, convoqua les évêques orientaux pour discuter de la vénération des icônes et des images ; il était farouchement opposé à ce qu'il considérait comme de l'idolâtrie. Presque tous les évêques réunis à ce concile suivirent l’empereur et condamnèrent la vénération des icônes comme un acte idolâtre. Ces événements marquèrent un choc culturel. La chasse aux images redoubla alors d'intensité : les mosaïques furent arrachées, les icônes et reliques, détruites. Les moines et les laïcs partisans des icônes, furent fouettés, torturés, noyés. Cette persécution s'apaisa après la mort de Constantin en 775.
Son fils Léon IV appela au calme mais ne leva pas l’interdiction faite aux icônes. À sa mort, en 780, son épouse Irène assuma la régence. Iconophile, elle convoqua un concile œcuménique à Nicée, en 787, afin d'annuler les décisions du concile de 754. En conséquence, le culte des images fut restauré.
Au ixe siècle survint une seconde crise iconoclaste. Elle se termina, elle aussi, par la restauration du culte des images, le.

Pour l'empereur Constantin V, les images proposent une apparence humaine sans rendre la gloire divine : elles trahissent leurs modèles, il faut donc les interdire, car l'Ancien Testament édicte « Tu ne feras aucune image sculptée, rien qui ressemble à ce qui est dans les cieux, là-haut, ou sur la terre, ici-bas, ou dans les eaux, au-dessous de la terre » (Ex 20, 4-5).
Les partisans des images avancent deux arguments. D'abord, ils soulignent que l'interdit sur les images est assorti d'une exception majeure, puisque Dieu lui-même ordonne de confectionner des images et de les placer dans le Saint des Saints (Ex 36, 35 et Ex 37, 7-9).
Ils la transmettent à leurs disciples : l'incarnation de Dieu justifie donc les images. L'interdit ne concerne donc que la période antérieure à l'incarnation et les éléments de la Trinité, restés invisibles.

Panagia is also the term for a particular type of icon of the Theotokos, wherein she is facing the viewer directly, usually depicted full length with her hands in the orans position, and with a medallion showing the image of Christ as a child in front of her chest.[1] This medallion symbolically represents Jesus within the womb of the Virgin Mary at the moment of the Incarnation. This type of icon is also called the Platytéra (Greek: Πλατυτέρα, literally wider ormore spacious): poetically, by containing the Creator of the Universe in her womb, Mary has become Platytera ton ouranon (Πλατυτέρα τῶν Ουρανῶν), "more spacious than the Heavens". This type is also sometimes called theVirgin of the Sign or Our Lady of the Sign, a reference to Isaiah 7:14:
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Such an image is often placed on the inside of the apse which rises directly over the altar of Orthodox churches.[2] In contrast with standard religious mosaics which usually have gold backgrounds, the Platytera is often depicted on a dark blue background, sometimes dotted with gold stars: a reference to the Heavens.
As with most Orthodox icons of Mary, the letters ΜΡ ΘΥ (short for ΜΗΤΗΡ ΘΕΟΥ, "Mother of God") are usually placed on the upper left and right of the halo of the Virgin Mary.
When an Orthodox bishop is vested for the Divine Liturgy or another service,
he wears a panagia and a pectoral cross over his othervestments.[5] The primate of an autocephalous church, when fully vested, wears a panagia, a pectoral cross, and an engolpion of Jesus.[6]
Bishops of all ranks when not vested will usually wear the panagia alone over their riassa[7] (cassock); this is often the detail that, to the casual observer, distinguishes a bishop from a priest or a monk. The panagia is usually oval in shape and crowned with a depiction of an Eastern mitre. Sometimes, bishops will wear a panagia which is either square (see picture, right) or shaped like a Byzantine double-headed eagle; this latter is especially true of Greek bishops.
When the bishop is vested before the Divine Liturgy, the panagia is presented to him on a tray. He blesses it with both hands and the subdeacons bring it to him to kiss and place the panagia around his neck, while the protodeacon swings the censer and says the following prayer:
